Project Details

  • An 8, 600 Sq.ft Community/Cultural Hub on the vacant ground floor space of the existing high-rise building at 33 King Street.
  • 26 affordablelive/work suites for artists and their families alongside the Community/Cultural Hub at 33 King Street.
  • 12,000 Sq.ft outdoor community open space for the Weston Farmer’s Market and other uses and activities as desired by the community.
  • Artscape, a not-for-profiturban development organization, will design and program the Community/Cultural Hub, live/work units and community open space in consultation with the local community and operate the spaces long term. For more details about Artscape, please visit artscapeweston.ca
  •  A new 370 plus unit rental building will be constructed on the 22 John St parcel. 
  • A public self-storage facility that will occupy the remaining vacant space on the ground floor of 33 King.
  • An application for Rezoning and Site Plan Approval has been made. 

HOW WE GOT HERE - Project Timeline

  • July 2010 the City of Toronto issued a request for quotations for a feasibility study for a cultural/creative hub in Weston Mt. Dennis to create a model for a cultural/creative hub.
  • March 2011 the City’s Cultural/Creative Hubs in Priority Neighbourhoods Feasibility Study, prepared by Artscape was released.  http://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2012/ey/bgrd/backgroundfile-45014.pdf
  • Early 2011 the City of Toronto planning division began a long term initiative, Weston 2021; a collaborative, action-oriented neighbourhood revitalization effort.   
  • May 2011, the City conducted a 2 ½ day design charette to examine development potential of the three main areas of the heart of Weston Village. Urban Land Institute charette
  • March 2012, Weston 2021 was adopted by City Council which provided a summary on initiatives in the Weston community and recommended that Council endorse the revitalization approach.
  • Fall 2012 the City Council authorized the sale of 22 John Street to accommodate the Metrolinx pedestrian bridge over the Georgetown South rail corridor / Union-Pearson Air-Rail Link and support the redevelopment of the surface parking lot at 22 John Street. The development sought by the Toronto Parking Authority and the City was to include a Creative/Cultural Hub with an operator and space for the Weston Village Farmer’s Market.
  • 2013-2014 Under the leadership and guidance of Councillor Nunziata, the successful respondent to the RFP for the sale of 22 John Street, Rockport Group, together with Artscape, the TPA and City staff have developed a plan that responds to the recommendationsarising from the previous efforts listed above and culminating in the delivery of a plan for a community cultural hub and 26 live work suites along with a new TPA parking lot and a purpose built rental apartment building.
  • March 2015 Council adopted The Weston Community / Cultural Hub - Next Steps - City Council Decision to approve the proposed preliminary funding model and program proposed by 22 John Street Developments Inc. (Rockport).
  • Today Rockport, with its partners Woodbourne Capital (owners of the neighbouring apartment building at 33 King Street) and Artscape, continue to work with City staff, the community and local Councillor on this development.
